Licensed paper football is back. Topps has locked in the release date and cover athlete for its first Flagship Football product since reclaiming the NFL license: 2026 Topps Flagship Football reaches retail Friday, August 21 — with pre-orders already open — and No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza of the Las Vegas Raiders is on the cover.

The Return of Flagship

Topps regained the NFL license in April, and this is its first Flagship Football product since reclaiming it, per Sports Illustrated. The 2025 football calendar skipped Flagship entirely — Topps led the year with Chrome before moving on to Finest and Cosmic Chrome, per SI. The return of a traditional paper Flagship product is a historic marker for licensed football; Cardlines describes it as the first licensed Topps Flagship Football release in more than a decade.

Pre-orders opened July 20. The format is a standard Flagship configuration: one relic or autograph per hobby box, with short-print insert chases named "Touchdown," "Struttin'" and "Billboard Material" featured on the box, per SI.

Mendoza Mania

Mendoza on the cover was hardly a surprise — he was the first pick of the 2026 draft — but his card market has been notable in its own right. His draft-night Topps NOW card passed 126,000 printed within 48 hours, with one collector receiving a copy inscribed "My 1st NFL Auto." The rookie has leaned into the hobby side of the job in Las Vegas: he owns the 1-of-1 2025 Bowman Chrome Superfractor of himself from his Indiana days, acquired from a classmate in exchange for College Football Playoff tickets and a jersey, and he has signed 2026 Topps Inception cards with "Viva Las Vegas" inscriptions, SI reported.

The Checklist

Cardlines' August release guide details a 400-card base set: the first 260 cards feature current NFL players, and the final 100 are dedicated to the 2026 rookie class. Per the same guide, the class is headlined by Fernando Mendoza, with rookie quarterbacks Ty Simpson, Garrett Nussmeier, Drew Allar, Carson Beck, Cade Klubnik, Cole Payton and Taylen Green, while skill-position players like Jeremiyah Love and Carnell Tate "may eventually emerge" — though Cardlines cautions that none enters the league with the collector demand to carry an entire product. Retired stars Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees anchor the insert and autograph content, per the guide, and Golden Mirror image variations are the primary short-print chase.

The one caution flag from Cardlines: the 2026 rookie class lacks the quarterback depth of stronger draft classes, and Mendoza may not see significant playing time in his first season. That makes this a product whose value story leans on the return of Flagship itself more than on a dominant rookie checklist.

The Verdict

The return of Topps Flagship Football is the story, not just the set. Eighteen days out, the comeback of licensed paper Flagship is already a historic marker for the hobby — and it lands with a marquee cover athlete whose own card market is already humming. Whether the rookie class delivers long-term is for the season to answer — but the product itself is already a historic release.
