Card of the Day: 1986 Fleer #121 Dominique Wilkins RC
The 1986 Fleer set is the foundation of modern basketball collecting, and card #121 belongs to the most spectacular dunker the sport has ever produced. Dominique Wilkins' rookie card sits in the same 132-card checklist as the Michael Jordan #57 — and it carries the same brutal condition problem. Of 7,793 copies PSA has graded, only 94 have come back GEM-MT 10.
The Card
1986-87 Fleer was the first major basketball release after a long drought, and it did something no set has managed since: it delivered rookie cards for an entire generation of Hall of Famers at once. Wilkins, pictured here in the Atlanta Hawks red-and-yellow with the ball held up at his chin, is #121 — near the back end of a checklist that runs to 132.
Wilkins earned the nickname "The Human Highlight Film" honestly. He was a nine-time All-Star, a two-time Slam Dunk Contest champion, and the NBA's scoring leader in 1985-86 — the season immediately before this card came out. He finished with more than 26,000 career points and was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. For Hawks collectors, this is the franchise's defining cardboard; for everyone else, it is the affordable way into the most important basketball set ever printed.
The Condition Challenge
Everything that makes 1986 Fleer difficult applies here. The cards were printed with thin red-white-and-blue borders that show every chip, they were cut inconsistently, and the stock takes a print snow easily. Centering is the usual killer.
The population tells the story: 94 GEM-MT 10s out of 7,793 graded is a gem rate of 1.21%. More than 98 percent of everything ever submitted has come back at a 9 or lower. Where the Value Lives
The PSA Price Guide ladder on this card is one of the steepest in the set. An NM-MT 8 lists at $220 and a MINT 9 at $1,025 — already a jump of nearly five times. The GEM-MT 10 lists at $17,600, roughly seventeen times the 9 and eighty times the 8.
That gap is the whole thesis of 1986 Fleer. The card is common enough at the bottom that a mid-grade copy is genuinely attainable, and scarce enough at the top that the 10 trades like a different card entirely.
